Exotic pet care.

Humankind has been fascinated with animals for millennia, and many civilizations left their mark on the domestication of numerous species. Birds, rodents, reptiles, amphibians, and different kinds of small mammals make excellent household pets, but they do come with a learning curve. The more you know about exotic pet care before you adopt, the more prepared you are to meet their unique needs. This not only facilitates your own enjoyment and satisfaction but ensures your new friend will thrive in your home.

The Basic Questions

Safety measures are among the most important aspects of exotic pet care. Not only tasked with providing a safe place for a new pet, but owners must also protect their own safety, too. Some pets can carry dangerous bacteria or behave aggressively at times. As such, we encourage all prospective owners of exotic pets to research the best possible pets that match your household dynamics, lifestyle, and responsibilities.

You may want to consider the following to get started:

  • Will your new pet have at least the minimum amount of required space? Are you prepared to provide the right enclosure, heat requirements, and humidity?
  • Do you understand what goes into their daily, weekly, and monthly sanitation needs?
  • Are you financially able to provide for their various nutritional needs, enrichment activities, housing/bedding needs, and adequate nutrition (including supplements, vitamins, and treats)?
  • Are you able to provide them with daily attention, interaction, and exercise?
  • Are you able to keep them safe from other household animals?
  • Are you prepared to maintain their grooming needs, including nail, teeth, or beak trimming?
  • Are you aware of the possible toxins in and around your home that could endanger your exotic pet?
  • Are you willing to support exotic pet care needs for their entire life? Some exotics and avians can live for more than a decade; others have shorter lifespans.
  • Are you willing to endure their activities at night if you adopt a nocturnal animal?

Choosing the Best One

If you live with children, some of the best exotics include rats, gerbils, rabbits, guinea pigs, leopard geckos, bearded dragons, and parakeets. These introductory/beginner exotic pets provide a great deal of fun and interest, and are relatively easy to care for.

Some owners of exotic pets graduate to more challenging species over time. Their experience is helpful to support ferrets, chinchillas, sugar gliders, chameleons, turtles, hedgehogs, parrots, and larger species of birds.
